For our 36th edition, FLARE: The Flagler Review will accept submissions of fiction, flash fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and art for consideration. Please limit longer works – flash fiction, fiction or nonfiction – to one submission. For poetry and art, please limit your submission to five pieces.

Importantly, we do not accept previously published pieces. FLARE also does not accept AI-generated materials. If you submit works produced (either all or in part) with artificial intelligence and you fail to indicate such, we reserve the right to withdraw our offer of publication, and/or remove your published works from our journal, website, promotional channels, and any other outlets.

FLARE editors select work through a blind reading process. Please remove names and identifying features from actual manuscripts and file extensions. Send a completed 75 - 100 word contributor's bio separate from your manuscript, within your cover letter. Manuscripts should be 12 pt font, double-spaced (single-spaced for poetry), and Times New Roman, Arial, or Georgia (unless the manuscript specifically needs a different font or format. If this is the case, it should be stated) and should include page numbers in the bottom right-hand corner. Submissions that do not follow our guidelines will be discarded.

FLARE is published by student editors in the Flagler College English Department in St. Augustine, Florida. Submissions are open to anyone who wishes to submit, and Flagler College students and alumni are also encouraged to submit but will not be given preference over other submissions. Please note simultaneous submissions in your cover letter, and notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere (either all or in part) by using the message function in Submittable. We receive a high volume of submissions and try to respond within 6 months. Payment for domestic contributors is in the form of one hard copy of the issue in which the author is published; international contributors will receive a free PDF copy of the issue in which their work appears.

Deadline for Spring Edition: January 15, 2025

PLEASE CONSIDER LEAVING A TIP IN OUR TIP JAR! Due to rising printing and shipping costs over the past few years, the production of FLARE: The Flagler Review has almost tripled in cost. In order to avoid instituting a submission fee, we've elected to start a Tip Jar option for those submitters who feel they may be able to offer a little something to help us keep up. This is a completely voluntary action, and will in no way affect acceptances or rejections. We appreciate anything you can spare, so we may continue offering our little literary journal to the world--now in it's 36th year. Thank you so much!

Poetry

FLARE seeks to publish the most developed poetry we can find. We place high value on unique and fresh poetic language. We also appreciate and encourage experimentation with form, style, and rhyme. We are most attracted to pieces that throw us around the room and make us reevaluate our perspectives. Submit no more than five poems per submission.

Fiction

FLARE looks for fiction that showcases evocative storytelling and fresh perspectives with developed voices. We admire original, organic, and thought-provoking pieces no matter the genre. Fiction submissions should be 3,000 words or less.

Flash Fiction

FLARE looks for flash fiction pieces that pack a punch. Surprise us, make us consider things we had never thought of before. Flash fiction submissions should be between 250 - 1,000 words.

Creative Nonfiction

We are open to any style or genre of nonfiction, but we are most drawn to work that tells a story, features narrative cohesion, and offers insight into a culture, situation, event, phenomenon or observation. Creative nonfiction submissions should be 3,000 words or less.

Art

FLARE primarily looks for cover art along with some section pieces. We look for strong, unique, statement art--from photography to design and illustration--in order to complement our written submissions. Please include no more than five pieces. CMYK format is required
